Chino Hills CA – June 3 2017, Steve McQueen Car & Motorcycle Show
1949 Triumph Trophy TR5 Scrambler: This motorcycle is one of three used in the filming of the TV series Happy Days. Famous bike builder and stuntman Bud Ekins built the motorcycle as a runner. The show aired on television from 1974 to 1984 and was one of the most successful series of the 70s.
Fonzie was played by Henry Winkler – the cool motorcycle riding greaser who lived above the Cunningham family's garage. The bike is now owned by Michel Eisenberg – the Disney and ABC mogul who must have had a soft spot, flush wallet or eminent studio domain for the iron pop culture icon.
Don Ince has been helping source and transport motorcycles for the Steve McQueen Car and Motocycle Show for a decade now. It was his honor and self-duty to securely move the bike from museum to show and back. The bike was the lead motorcycle sideshow for the private fundraising dinner night and again at the show for the public.
Despite being one of the most famous bike visuals in history, few folks would likely know what kind of bike it really was. The average American might answer Harley Davidson incorrectly. Around 6600 units of the 1949 Triumph Trophy were manufactured with the following specs:
Engine: Air cooled V-twin
Bore & Stroke: 63 x 80 mm
Displacement: 500 CC/30.5 CI
Compression: 6.0:1
Power: 35 HP
Transmission: 4 speed
The bikes served more as stage props than used on street scenes, but that does not tarnish their street cred today. It's just the kind of thing you can expect from the Steve McQueen Car and MOTORCYCLE Show.
